A dangerous goods term, describing a single package and/or combination packaging (inner receptacles, outer box or drum, etc.) that conforms with IMO/U.N. packaging specifications as set forth in IMDG Code, Part 6, and which has been certified by the manufacturer after having been performance tested and demonstrated to conform to specification by a qualified testing facility, typically an independent laboratory. Specific testing methods and record keeping are specified in Part 6. Packaging manufacturers must provide users with these test reports, which the shipper must be able to provide to a carrier or competent authority upon demand. Most jurisdictions throughout the world now require this type of packaging for all dangerous goods entering the country.
Packaging sold by a manufacturer and/or fabricated by a shipper represented as meeting UN POP standards must contain a label by the manufacturer displaying the distinctive "U/N" mark in a circle,
followed by additional information; refer to U.N. POP Package Certification Marks. Such a label constitutes the manufacturer's certification that the standard has been complied with and the package will withstand the applicable test(s) specified in the standard.
