Steven Charles Hunt
Mr. Hunt is a highly skilled and dedicated professional with extensive experience in the transportation of hazardous materials, training program development, management and engineering. As founder and president of Shipmate, Inc., he leads an internationally recognized firm providing compliance inspections, training, consulting and software development for the chemicals and hazardous materials transportation industry. Shipmate clients include global manufacturers, large and small shippers, carriers , stevedores and transportation intermediaries, plus federal, state and local government agencies, including the U.S. Departments of Transportation, Commerce, and Defense; U.S. Customs Service; U.S. Coast Guard and California Highway Patrol.
Prior to establishing Shipmate in 1994, Mr. Hunt was a U.S. Coast Guard officer. Following his graduation from the Coast Guard Academy in 1986 with a BS in Ocean Engineering, he supervised operation, maintenance and repair of all engineering systems onboard the Coast Guard Cutter Decisive, during which time the ship won several Engineering and Damage Control Excellence Awards. He personally developed the firefighting and damage control plans which became the model for all Coast Guard cutters in that class.
In 1990, he joined the U.S. Coast Guard Hazardous Materials Branch in Washington, D.C., where he became a U.S. delegate to the International Maritime Organization (IMO) Carriage of Dangerous Goods Subcommittee and sole U.S. representative to the IMOs Working Group on Portable Tanks, where he personally drafted the portable tank provisions of the 27th Amendment of the IMDG Code and Title 49, U.S. Code of Federal Regulations.
Then Lt. Hunt earned a Master of Science degree in Chemical Engineering from the University of Virginia. There, in addition to his studies, he conducted pioneering research in alternative refrigerants for which he now holds a U.S. patent.
Later, as Los Angeles Division Chief, U.S. Coast Guard Marine Safety Office, Hunt was in charge of port safety and security for the Ports of Long Beach and Los Angeles, and the Container Inspection Division. Responsibilities included oil and hazmat spill response planning, and training to industry and other government agencies in hazmat safety and spill response. While in this assignment, he planned and supervised more than 85 federal, state and local law enforcement agents in the execution of the largest U.S. Coast Guard Joint Task Force to date.
Mr. Hunts articles appear regularly in the HazMat Packager & Shipper, Port Intermodal Operations Association and Harbor Transportation Club newsletters. He has been a featured speaker at the Conference on the Safe Transport of Hazardous Articles, Hazardous Materials Advisory Council, National Association of Chemical Distributors, American Institute of Chemical Engineers, Los Angeles Customs and Freight Forwarders Association, South Carolina International Trade Conference, and numerous other institutions.
Mr. Hunt is currently drafting the curriculum for a professional designation in Hazardous Materials Transportation Management (HMTM) through California State University, Long Beach.
